IT was discovered by famous explorers and has featured in blockbuster movies, but on every other day Wattamolla Beach is just a quiet coastal retreat.

Surrounded by bushland and almost hidden by the winding escarpment to the north and south, Wattamolla Beach is a popular destination for people wanting to enjoy and explore the Royal National Park.

Royal National Park ranger Bill Sullivan said Wattamolla was a great candidate for the Mercury's Best Beach for Day Trips Award because there was so much to see and do.

"It's probably up there with the prettiest beaches in Australia and it caters to visitors who want to go for a walk, swim, sunbake or play ball games with their kids on the beach," Mr Sullivan said.

"It's also great for day trips, because it's so accessible for people from both Sydney and Wollongong."

Day trippers can take supplies and use the gas barbecue and picnic facilities or opt to buy food from the kiosk (although rangers advise to check kiosk availability beforehand).

Ranger Mick Hand said people should come prepared if they wanted to spend a day at Wattamolla.

"It does get very hot, so we advise that everyone brings plenty of water, a hat, sunscreen, shirt, foot protection and a shade shelter if possible," Mr Hand said

"During this time of year it gets very busy down there.

"So the advice would be if you want a nice spot, get in early.

"Visitors can swim in the still lagoon, lie on the sand, paddle in the ocean or venture from the beach to try bushwalking, sightseeing or wildlife watching.

"It's a quiet, relaxed area sheltered from the harsher qualities of nature, where families can come and enjoy their day with adequate facilities in Australia's oldest national park."
