Family Movies

Family movies are one of the most popular genres of film commercially with most aiming to a wider audience and demographic than most other film genres. Due to the family movies status, most of the films in this genre have several layers to appease the different ages of the audiences members watching.

What this means is that the one family movie will need to have appealing aspects that suit ages from five years old to adult ages of parents, to make the film enjoyable for the entire family. A successful family movie will operate on several different levels of humour and poignancy, meaning that different ages and demographics should get different meanings and jokes out of the one film.

One of the most important aspects of the family movies genre is that the rating attached is generally given a G or PG rating, meaning it has appropriate themes and scenes for all age groups. This has become more of an issue over recent years as the trend for superhero movies has resulted in an awkward balancing act between children’s audiences that want the superhero comics brought to life, and the adult demands on an action movie.

The most successful family movies tend to come from several different movie companies, namely Disney, Dreamworks and Disney/Pixar, with well known titles include Toy Story and Shrek along with all the animated Disney classics.

Examples of family movies is the Home Alone series and Kung Fu Panda:
