Synopsis

Maybe the Farrelly brothers took it a little too far but the movie's got a certain... something. There's Something About Mary, created by the Farelly brothers might be slightly offensive, but it's poked enough fun at body parts to make it grossly hilarious. Starring as Mary is Cameron Diaz, with her electric smile, infectious laugh, and sunny personality, Ben Stiller as Ted the high school nerd who's still a little obsessed with the girl thirteen years later, and Matt Dillon as the sleazy, cheesy private investigator. What is it about Mary that keeps the fellows close by and the audiences amused? The Farrelly brothers seemed to have gotten something right.

We focus on Ted, stereotype high school geek, with braces, bad skin, and horrible hair, who constantly moons over the pretty, tall, popular Mary. But one day the two cross paths and something just clicks. Ted gathers enough strength to ask her to the prom, and the two are dressed to impress on the fateful night. But as we hear the starting lines of that Carpenters song, all goes down the drain, and Ted is literally caught in a jam. The nightmarish prom episode is not forgotten by Ted, who's still in love with Mary over a decade later, so he hires Pat Healy to see what's up with his high school crush. But to the dismay of the audience, our guy can't just seem to get the gal. Ted has to fight for his girl, dealing with creepy stalkers, a terrifying grandma and her hyperactive pet, gay accusations, and other unforeseen events.

There's Something About Mary isn't your intellectual comedy - definitely not Woody Allenesque, or your biting political satire, or even your carefully crafted slapstick. In fact, you could even say the Farelly brothers have opted to go for the cheapest gag in the book. But don't forget the infamous hair gel scene and tell me you don't find yourself groaning and laughing at the same time. There's Something About Mary, with its in-your-face sex-laced humor and graphic scenarios, is sure to stir something in you.
