Synopsis

And the ogre and the princess lived happily ever after -- what? This line isn't the conventional end to standard fairy tales. In place of Prince Charming is Shrek, a monstrous green ogre who's the unlikely love interest of fair Princess Fiona. And the usual sidekick of lover boy isn't the clumsy little errand boy. It's a loudmouth donkey, played by the equally energetic Eddie Murphy, that's perpetually arguing with the grumpy Shrek. But it's this unusual twist of the fairy tale that entertains the audience members. Shrek, voiced by comic genius, SNL veteran, and Austin Powers persona Mike Myers, is sure to put you in stitches.

Lending her voice to the lovely Princess Fiona is comedienne Cameron Diaz, and her character is anything out of the ordinary as well. Stirring her from slumber (not) in Sleeping Beauty style is Shrek, and she, Donkey, and Shrek set on adventure to Duloc to meet the power-hungry Lord Farquaard who wants to marry Fiona for him to be proclaimed king. But surprise, surprise - not only is Fiona unlike the helpless damsel; she's also stricken with a curse that allows her and Shrek to have very strange similarities. The ogre and the princess find that they have something in common, enough for love to be created between the two. But of course, just like in fairy tales, the two are put to the test and before you can say, "and they lived happily after, the end" and see the lovers go riding into the sunset, many obstacles would have to be surpassed.

Shrek isn't just for the kids to enjoy; even adults can find this animated film to their liking as well. Making millions in the box office, along with the equally entertaining Shrek 2 and Shrek the 3rd, it mixes the right amount of humor fit for the more mature audiences and has enchanting qualities that would appeal to the children as well. Shrek, Donkey, Fiona, and all the characters you've known as a child from story books band together for a new and surprising story that will one day be considered as timeless, just like the good old fairy tale classics.
