Synopsis
A captivating movie that earned numerous Oscar awards, Spielberg's "Schindler's List" is a film about the real-life experiences of Jews who survived the holocaust through one man's kindness set against the brutal leadership of the Nazis. The black-and-white style of this movie, reminiscent of film noire, perfectly captured the era of this historical event. Highlighting certain scenes through a dash of color such as the part with a girl wearing a red overcoat, Spielberg immediately puts the audience into an emotional trance all throughout the film.
The movie tells about the humanity in Oscar Schindler (Liam Neeson), an ambitious and womanizer-businessman during the 2nd World War, which set him apart from other Nazi supporters who want nothing but blood and death from the Jews. What started out as a simple business venture turned into a life-saving quest that emancipated more than a thousand Jews from being trapped inside gas chambers. Despite the dangers he faced, Schindler, along with his faithful accountant Itzhak Stern (Ben Kingsley) hired Jewish workers so as to save them from death. At the final part of the movie, the descendants of the survivors who were rescued by Schindler's factory placed stones at his actual grave in Israel.
The stunning performances of Liam Neeson as Schindler and Ralph Fiennes as the infamous Amon Goeth combined with the artistic cinematography made this film one of the best movies made about the Holocaust. Many of the scenes effectively depicted the message and theme of the movie because of the haunting soundtrack mixed with the "darkness and light" effect of the black-and-white scenes.
The success of the movie lies in the stunning portrayal of what really happened during those dangerous times where being Jewish meant a death sentence. This work of art was actually a screen adaptation of Thomas Keneally's book "Schindler's Arc". The incredible truth about a Nazi turned Jewish savior was beautifully preserved through the interviews and testimonies given by the survivors and other associates who witnessed Schindler's amazing kindness. An unforgettable movie experience, "Schindler's List" was actually recognized by the US Library of Congress as a culturally important work of art.
