Synopsis
Heroic movies such as Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia" are popular because of the message they all convey -- that heroes, especially the enigmatic ones, will always be remembered because of their contributions and the roles they played in history.
The film begins with the tragic accident that caused Lawrence's (O' Toole) life during the 1930's. Each of his adventurous exploits was told in a flashback, along with majestic shots of the dessert.
The whole story revolved around the adventures of Lawrence as he led the Bedouins of the Arabian dessert against the Turkish enemies during the First World War. Because of Lawrence's deep understanding of the Arabian culture, traditions, and political background, he was able to convince numerous Arabian tribes to rebel against their Turkish foes.
The movie highlighted four events that made Lawrence a prominent historical figure. These events were the triumphant acquisition of the Aqaba's main port, the tragic capture of Lawrence in Deraa where he was also tortured and raped, the Tafas massacre, and the downfall of Damascus. Despite Lawrence's efforts to unify the Arabs against their Turkish foes, he believed that he has failed himself through his unsuccessful mission. The last scene depicted Lawrence's trip back home with a motorcycle passing by that served as an omen since he died because of a motorcycle accident.
Each of these parts was a proof of Lawrence's eccentric and epic journey as he lived in the Arabian dessert with Sherif Ali, his Arab brother. Lawrence's character as a mysterious, ambitious, self-absorbed, and sexually-confused British soldier who lived his life at a dessert was stunningly portrayed by Peter O' Toole, catapulting his name into the spotlight.
The beautiful shots of the Arabian dessert combined with Lawrence's enigmatic and controversial adventures made this film one of the most unforgettable ones. Lawrence was the ultimate representation of a hero who lived an interesting life despite the fact that he was only an ordinary human being who had high ambitions for himself. This dramatic yet fascinating twist captured the imagination of millions of fans, turning this movie into an internationally-recognized film. This movie actually earned a number of Oscars that included the "Best Picture of the Year" award.
