Synopsis
A beloved romantic film that captured the hearts of many generations since its release in 1942, "Casablanca" is a classic whose meteoric rise in popularity was evidently seen as years passed by. Regarded by many as a classic love story that starred Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Paul Henreid in a love triangle, this cinematic work of art was a turning point for Curtiz's career as a movie director. Due to the success of this motion picture, it also catapulted Bogart's and Bergman's careers into the spotlight, making them one of history's unforgettable movie couples.
The movie revolves around Blaine's (Bogart) ultimate dilemma -- to choose the woman he loves or his duty as an American citizen. His beloved one, portrayed by Bergman, is married to a rebel leader (Victor) who is strongly against the cruel Nazis. Blaine and Ilsa (Bergman) had a romantic past that ended unexpectedly. Years later, they met again at Casablanca with Ilsa already married to Victor (Henreid). Due to Victor's risky political circumstance, he has to go to Lisbon to acquire a direct flight to America. Meanwhile, Blaine has access to the proper documents that would enable Victor to go to Lisbon. On the other hand, Ilsa has admitted that her heart still beats for Blaine. Despite his pains and troubled heart, Blaine was able to figure it all out in the end.
Because of the film's continuing influence, several films made a reference to some of "Casablanca's" memorable scenes and lines. The ending scene was probably one of the most unforgettable ones as Blaine uttered the famous line 'Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship'.
Due to the film's clever screenplay, amazing cast, and fantastic direction, it earned several Oscar nominations and awards. The undeniable chemistry among the actors was also a major factor that made this film an instant classic. Decades later, movie critics still claim that "Casablanca" is a timeless piece that beautifully portrays the following virtues -- love, patriotism, and bittersweet redemption from a love lost.
This movie was released decades ago but its effect on the audience is still the same -- a source of hope and redemption despite uncertainties, difficult times, and heartbreaking reality.
